Like all the infrastructure and transportation projects of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), even its new head office at Bandra-Kurla Complex has witnessed an over two-fold increase in cost. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated it on Saturday.

The increase in cost has more than doubled in just a span of just six years. The work began in March 2008 with a schedule to complete it by March 2010 at a cost of Rs48.91 crore. After six years of delays, it now stands at nearly Rs110 crore.

The nine-storey building is equipped with many a facility — auditorium, boardrooms, two-level basement, two service floors, public address system, CCTVs, door frame metal detectors, baggage scanners, fire hydrants, sprinklers, smoke detectors, ample parking space, etc. The building also provides for a sewerage treatment plant, rainwater harvesting and solar energy among other facilities.

According to an MMRDA official, all the floors provide column-free space in the entire office. While the main staircase and lift lobbies have granite flooring, the lobbies and entrance are provided with Italian marble flooring. The total area of the building is 4,904sqm.

"The added space will come in handy while housing additional workforce that will be hired for new projects, such as Dahisar to DN Nagar Metro II corridor, Dahisar East to Andheri East Metro VII corridor, that have been undertaken by the MMRDA recently. The authority is also implementing a few more big-ticket projects," said UPS Madan, metropolitan commissioner.

"The project was given three extensions and work is still incomplete. That is what has led to the cost hike," said Anil Galgali, an RTI activist.
