It may become possible to beat the traffic congestion on CST Road (Kurla) in the next few years. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is planning a flyover and an underpass at the Kapadia Nagar-Kalina belt.
Ever since the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road was opened to motorists on April 18, the congestion on CST Road has been huge, and officials in the traffic dept and MMRDA have been trying to find a solution to this.
The 3-km bridge at an estimated Rs 300 crore, is to come up just ahead of the Imam Ahmed Raza Chowk at Kapadia Nagar; it will criss-cross University of Mumbai-Maharashtra Fire Services Academy-Grand Hyatt Hotel, and take a right turn to Western Express Highway and cross over the Vakola flyover to land just before the Vakola junction on the service road. There will be ramps in between (to enter and exit from the bridge near the university).
"We have the concept plan ready; some details need to be worked out, however. And we feel this is the solution to resolve the traffic congestion on CST Road. It will also reduce the travelling time (East-West connectivity)," said a senior MMRDA official.
The proposed underpass will assist in easing traffic movement between CST Road and Bandra-Kurla Complex. The 350m x 7.5m underpass is estimated to cost Rs 25 crore.
Motorists from Kalina heading to Bandra-Kurla Complex will be able to use the underpass that will start from CST Road's east-bound lane some meters ahead of Imam Ahmed Raza Chowk and take a right turn to surface at the Bandra-Kurla Complex.
Motorists coming from and going to the business district will use the existing road.
The Santacruz-Chembur Link Road is used by around 70,000 vehicles daily (weekdays) and has also come as a relief for people travelling between East-West areas of Mumbai. The existing road network in Mumbai focuses on North-South connectivity.
The MMRDA executive committee headed by chief secretary Swadheen Kshatriya, on Saturday, awarded the contract for constructing the 1.6km Bandra-Kurla Complex-Chunabhatti Connector. dna had reported that the state govt was planning to hold the bhoomipujan of this project in the next couple of weeks to beat the model code of conduct which would be in place before the assembly polls. The project is expected to cut down on travelling time between Eastern Express Highway and Bandra-Kurla Complex.
