Will the bullet train connecting Mumbai with Ahmedabad start from Bandra Kurla complex? It is uncertain, after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) objected to the plan. However, another round of discussions will be held in January to explore the possibility of having the same in the business district.

The project is an ambitious one, involving a train running at a speed of 300 kmph on the 534 km-long route. However, the MMRDA was unaware about the plan of having the terminating or originating station at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), until representatives conducting a feasibility study approached the agency with their set of questions about the area.

A senior MMRDA official informed: "Officially, we had not received any letter on the project. But after we got to know about it, we objected to the plan as it will not only shrink our land bank, which we use to lease out for funding infrastructure projects, but also will add to traffic in the area."

Authorities are of the opinion that the alignment of the bullet train can be changed from BKC to Bandra Terminus, or even Lokmanya Tilak Terminus as it would also mean integration of transportation.

The official added: "As it is, there is enough railway land available at Bandra Terminus. We are already making attempts to decongest the entry and exit points of this business district and improve its connectivity. This project will mean all the planning involved till now going haywire."

Nonetheless, discussions are underway among various stakeholders and agencies to finalise the location.
