The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday took up the initiative to clean, collect and dispose waste at the Girgaum Chowpatty beach after Ganpati visarjan.

In a major cleanliness drive, to clean up the garbage on the second, 7th, 12th and 13th day of the Ganesh visarjan, this year the MMRC partnered with HCC, one of the contractors of Mumbai Metro-3, and the Solid Management Department of the BMC. A total of 27,064 Ganpati idols were immersed across the city by 11 pm on Tuesday.

"A total of 93 volunteers from HCC participated across these four days, and devoted nearly 444 man hours for the entire task. The volunteers undertook the task of collection of all the waste during and post Ganpati idol immersion, segregation of wet and dry waste and then loading the waste in different vehicles which was later handed over to the BMC," HCC said in a statement on Wednesday. The idea was to help the civic body in cleaning up the beach, it added.

Meanwhile, the MMRC in an e-mail, said, "This activity was undertaken by around 30 employees at regular intervals to maintain cleanliness in and around the Girgaum Chowpatty area."
