The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), executing the Colaba-BKC-Seepz Metro-3 underground corridor, has approached the Mumbai Police Commissioner seeking approval to carry out controlled blasting using explosives for the construction of the underground CST Metro station at Azad Maidan near the BMC headquarters.

A senior MMRC official said, "A trial blasting was recently conducted at Panvel and after getting the police commissioner's approval we would be approaching the explosive department who would later give their approval and guidance for carrying out the controlled blasting." The official added, "For the underground CST Metro station's construction, controlled blasting will be conducted behind the Ramleela Mandal parallel to the BMC headquarters inside Azad Maidan. We have gone up to 12 metres and now further blasting will be done 12 metres below the ground."

SK Gupta, director (projects), MMRC denied that dynamite would be used for the controlled blasting. "We are going to use explosives that are permitted by the explosive department, and they will be purchased from vendors of the department. The whole process will be done in the presence of police after taking all safety precautions."

The MMRC has currently started the process of lowering and assembling the tunnel boring machines (TBM) that will be conducted 20 to 25 metres below the ground for excavating rocks using 17 TBMs. Currently, around four TBMs have reached India from China and the rest are expected by January 2018.

What the blast?

Blasting is carried out for hard rock excavation and is common in several civil engineering projects like tunnels, canals, pipeline projects, hydel power projects and ports.
