In a symbolic protest against removal of night school teachers, MLC Kapil Patil gifted black paper lanterns to state Education Minister Vinod Tawde and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday.

Patil placed one black paper lantern at the Seva Sadan residence of the education minister, and was stopped by the Mumbai Police while attempting to place a lantern at the Chief Minister's residence. Patil claimed that the government had rendered many night school teachers jobless by removing them this year. However, the state education department has refuted this allegation.

Patil, said, "This government has made night school teachers to suffer. They have been removed and made jobless. Many are under debt of home loan or education loan of their children, and are not celebrating Diwali as they are jobless."

However, some experts said removing night school teachers would not affect them drastically, as these teachers work in day schools as well.

An activist working for an NGO that has adopted night schools said, "The reason night school teachers were removed by the education department was that they were working during day time and coming to teach in night schools as well. According to education officials, if teachers come tired from day shift work, what they will teach in night schools? Hence those teachers were removed and department have decided to recruit new qualified night school teachers who would work only for night schools. But unfortunately the recruitment is not yet been done."

Ramesh Joshi, BMC, Shikshak Sabha, general secretary, said, "It is not that students are getting affected because many night schools teachers have been removed. Teachers are removed because students are less. Students have many different ways now to appear for the SSC exam rather than going to night schools."

BB Chavan, deputy director of school education, said, "It's wrong to say night school teachers are now jobless. Only those who were working in day as well as night schools have been asked to work in one shift. A teacher cannot work day and night as this will leave him/her mentally and physically tired. Also, they were taking salaries from the government for both shifts. Hence, government thought why not recruit qualified teachers who would exclusively teach night school students with fresh mind. Night schools are not shut, and they will get teachers recruited soon. Minority schools can do their recruitments."
