The city’s walls have been  held hostage to political gimmickry again. Some 10 banners have recently come up on the streets of South Mumbai, declaring that Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant has been ‘missing’, which is meant to convey that the Member of Parliament is missing in action as he hasn’t been available to resolve the issues his constituency is facing.

The banners, which have allegedly been sponsored by a Congress leader, are based on allegations by the locals residing near Minara Masjid that Sawant has not been seen in his constituency ever since he was elected in 2014, and has consistently failed to resolve their issues.

The banners, which bear Sawant’s photograph and a caption in Marathi, have been put up in Crawford Market area, near Zakaria Masjid, Minara Masjid and other spots in South Mumbai.

The caption translates as: ‘Have you seen this person? This MP has gone missing from 2014 till 2018.’ It goes on to add: ‘Wherever you are, come back, we will not admonish you.’

The posters are endorsed by Pandit Sudhanshu Bhatt, of Mumbai Region Congress Commitee. “MP Sawant has failed drastically in resolving the issues of the people living in his constituency. After winning the election, he has been out of reach. His constituents are upset. They feel cheated after voting for him,” said Bhatt.

Wasim Qureshi, a resident of Crawford Market area, said, “We are dealing with all these problems which the MP should take up with the central government. None of our issues, including the Hancock bridge matter, has been addressed. We try to meet him but he is always unavailable.”

When DNA contacted MP Arvind Sawant, he rubbished the charges. “I have worked tirelessly for the people of my constituency and have taken up their issues with the central government. Letters have been written to the departments at the Centre, as well as to the railways,” he said, without elaborating.

Political Punch

  • Shiv Sena’s Arvind Sawant represents the Mumbai South constituency in Lok Sabha.
  • He was elected to Parliament after the 2014 general elections.
  • His constituents claim he is rarely seen in the area or available to resolve their problems.
  • Sawant, however, told DNA he has worked tirelessly for his people.
