A Mira Road society is apparently scared of puppies! Days before seven stray puppies were separated for their mother, bundled up and dumped next to a nullah outside their complex, the residents of Highness Park had held a general meeting where they unanimously decided to get rid of them, claiming that the strays 'create a nuisance' and could 'harm their lives'.

Society members have however, rubbished allegations made by animals activists who have accused them of cruelty.

dna had reported about the puppies being dumped outside the society in its Friday edition. The society, located in Nityanand Nagar, faced the music after activist Salim Charania of the Peace for Animal Welfare Association (PAWA) rescued the dogs from near a nullah and complained to the Kashimira police. An MBMC contractual employee identified as Pradeep alongwith society member Elizabeth Alfred were booked for cruelty to animals under the Bombay Police Act.

On January 6, society members had held a general meeting where they allegedly took a unanimous decision to get rid of the pups. They decided to 'lawfully' shift them outside the complex, citing hygiene concerns.

"56 members were present in the meeting. We took the decision to get rid of the stray dogs due to the unhygienic conditions and nuisance they create. We did not mean to be cruel as we too are animal lovers. We cannot go above the law to harm animals. But due to less space and the increasing number of strays, we fear that they might bite us, which cause could harm to our lives," said Anurag Agrawal, treasurer, Highness Park.

"We also rubbish the allegations made by animal activists that we intended to kill the stray pups by dumping them. We will follow due procedure and are co-operating with the police regarding the incident," added Agrawal.
