Many of those arrested by the Thane police for their alleged involvement in extorting United States (US) nationals through bogus call centres had weaved dreams of lavish lifestyle for them and their families. The families of those involved in the case, however, were completely unaware that their wards were generating money from a racket that runs into hundreds of crore of rupees. The families were under the notion that their wards were working at international call centres.

Family members of the arrested 70 persons by the Thane Police on the October 4 raids were present as they were produced in the Thane court.

"We had taken a loan to purchase a house, but now our dreams have crashed and we are now left to live on the streets. I am worried as to how I can get my husband out of this issue," said 28-year-old Borivli resident and wife of one of the persons arrested. "I was under the impression that my husband worked for an international call centre which was into recovering loans given by the banks," she said.

While, for a 45-year-old father from Malad, his only hope now is to take care of the ailing wife suffering from cardiovascular disease, who has not been informed about the arrest of their son. "I have just informed my wife that our son has been sent for a training abroad and for further promotions. I feared that if I revealed to her about the arrest, then that would have led her to a fatal shock," said the father.

Investigation Officer and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mukund Hatote, pleaded for extension of police custody for the accused in the Thane court. "We have to interrogate the employees for a few more days as the hard disks have to be scanned further. We have got the trails of the masterminds, and we are tracking their movements. With the help of the Gujarat police we will soon be able to nab them," said Hatote.

The main accused in the case -- Sagar Thakkar alias Shaggy, his accomplices Ali, Tapesh, Jimmy and Akhil Singh are on the run since the crackdown on the call centres. While juveniles held in the case have been kept in the Children Home.
