Probe into the multi-crore racket, that was operating through bogus call-centres in Mira Road revealed that some of the call-centre employees used to spend a huge chunk of their earnings in bars and were also into consuming recreational drugs to keep them active and talkative at night with more confidence.

"During the course of our investigation, we learnt that some employees working in the bogus call-centres were addicted to recreational drugs and visited dance bars prior to their working shifts, and splurged money on bar girls after they received handsome incentives," said a Thane crime branch police officer.

"Consumption of drugs helped them to stay awake and active for a long duration, and make them more talkative and alert persons while they used to issue threats to the US nationals. The drugs also helped them boost their confidence while talking to the victims as well," said the officer.

One of the family members of an employee held in the police custody, said, "We never knew about our son being into drugs. We were under the impression that he worked for an international call-centre and we knew couple of his friends, who were into vices, and we had always asked him to stay away from them."

The fraudsters used to earn quick money by giving threats to the US nationals, posing as Internal Revenue Services (IRS) officials as they asked their victims to purchase iTunes card and later demanded for the code which was later transferred to the other card and was sold in the black market to fetch a good price, which would route back to India after the commission is deducted by the US counterparts.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mukund Hatote, said, "We will produce the four accused in the Thane Court on Thursday. While the arrested persons are being interrogated in various rounds, we are trailing the masterminds as we have got leads in the case,” said Hatote.

17 persons are under Thane police custody, while others have been sent to judicial custody by the Thane Court.
