MUMBAI: A 15-year old girl was allegedly kidnapped by her maternal aunt Rohini Kedare, 28, and then raped by her uncle Manoj Shrimali, 30, several times.

According to the police, the accused said they did it because they were unable to have a child of their own. The girl’s ordeal stretched over a period of two weeks, after which the accused dropped her back to her Ghatkopar home.
According to the police, the girl’s parents and her elder sister grew suspicious when they found that there was a change in her behaviour ever since she had returned. The girl had become aloof and seemed depressed.

“When her elder sister asked her, she related the incident to her and then informed her parents. They then approached the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) with a complaint about the case,” said the investigating officer and sub inspector Irfan Shaikh.

The CWC, after conducting inquiries about the incident, forwarded the complaint to Ghatkopar police on March 14. The Ghatkopar police, based on the complaint, arrested Kedare and her brother Milind from the city on Wednesday, while Manoj was arrested from Ahmedabad.

Kedare approached the victim’s parents on December 1, 2007 asking them to let her take her niece on a vacation with her. The girl’s parents agreed and allowed Kedare to take their child. However, Kedare took her niece to Nallasopara where Milind lives. In the meantime, Kedare had informed her husband Shrimali, who works for a private firm in Ahmedabad, that she had brought the girl to Nallasopara. Kedare and Milind allegedly threatened her with dire consequences if she did not have sex with Shrimali. When Shrimali arrived, he allegedly raped her.

“Shrimali allegedly raped the minor at Nallasopara then took her to Ahmedabad, where she was raped several times during the next 10 days. Then they left the girl back to her Ghatkopar residence on December 14,” said police inspector CG Naik, Ghatkopar police station. The accused have been charged under sections 34 (common intention), 366 (A) (forced or seduced into illicit intercourse), 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. They have been remanded in custody till March 25.

“Kedare said she had married Shrimali six months ago. This was her third marriage,” said senior inspector GT Padwal. “On learning that Kedare was infertile, an angry Shrimali told her that he wanted a child anyhow. So she hatched the plan, thinking it would help her solve the problem,” said senior inspector GT Padwal. Padwal said Shrimali confessed to raping the girl more than four times. “The medical report showed that the girl had been raped.”
