In yet another case of food poisoning due to midday meals, 23 schoolchildren, all 13-year-olds were admitted to Sion hospital on Tuesday. The incident occurred at 3.40pm in Dayanand Balak Vidyalaya, Matunga East.

The children were admitted for observation after at least six started vomitting and got loose motions. Others complained of pain in the abdomen, said Dr Avinash Supe, dean, Sion hospital. "We have administered intravenous drugs and other antibiotics to the children. Fortunately, all are stable and under observation," he added.

The Matunga police and Food and Drug Administration officials visited the school for conducting investigations. Samples of the pulao given to the students were taken for testing in laboratory. The midday meal was distributed by Bhandup-based contractor Kedar Oswal of Priyadarshini Niradhar Mahila Mandal.

Principal Raodhar Ram Tiwari said, "The children had their usual portion of the meal after which some started vomitting and experienced loose motions and abdominal pain. They were then taken to hospital."

"We have been informed about the case. At this point of time, we are carrying out preliminary investigations and soon an FIR will be filed against the guilty," said senior inspector Raghvendra Thakur.

Last year, on November 20, a Std VI student from Deonar municipal school had found a worm in his midday meal. Also, dna had reported on November 18 that not only is there blatant violation of norms but also siphoning of good ration to replace it with sub-standard ingredients.

The state government's resolution clearly states that children must be given khichdi in their midday meals throughout the week, along with fruits, soya biscuits, chikki, rajgiri ladoos, jaggery and groundnuts once a week. However, schools violate the norms by serving glucose and cream biscuits, puri bhaji, pav bhaji and poha.

When asked about the incident, education committee chairman Vinod Shelar said, "We will inquire about the matter in detail."
