Taking suo motu cognisance of the gruesome Mankhurd incident in which a woman died after falling into the septic tank of a public urinal, the Maharashtra Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has asked the commissioner of police to file a report as to what action has been taken against the BMC officials responsible for the negligence. The commission has also expressed its displeasure over the area DCP not responding to the commission's order seeking report.

"It is noticed that the deputy commissioner of police zone-VI was directed to submit a report. There is neither a report filed, nor has any representation been made. Hence, the commissioner of police is directed to look into, and submit a report regarding the action taken by the police in respect to the incident, as well as regarding non-appearance before the commission," reads an order passed by Justice SR Bannurmath, chairperson, MHRC.

As for action against the BMC officials, the commission has said it would first like to wait for the BMC and the police report, which are due on April 23. Investigation of the case has been commenced by Trombay police.

The incident took place on March 5 when a 45-year-old woman died after falling into a septic tank when the floor of a public urinal in Mankhurd collapsed. The deceased, identified as Kalpana Pimple, was using the urinal when the entire RCC flooring caved, and she fell 10 feet.

The incident took place around 6.30 am in Maharashtra Nagar, Trombay. On hearing a loud thud, a girl using the adjacent latrine went to check. She saw Pimple fallen inside the septic tank and shouted for help.
