Henceforth the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) will be limiting construction of high income group (HIG) homes and focussing more on low income group (LIG) and middle income group (MIG) tenements.

Housing minister Prakash Mehta on Sunday announced that henceforth only 3-4% of the housing stock constructed will consist of HIG flats. He made the announcement at the sidelines of the affordable housing lottery draw by MHADA held on Sunday at Rangsharda Auditorium in Bandra West.

“this year we have been able to reduce the rates of Mhada apartments by 10-12%,” added Mehta. During the past two years, the prices of Mhada homes were almost equivalent to the prices of flats developed by private builders, which caused an uproar not only among the then-opposition parties, but also the public who look forward to Mhada’s annual lottery draw.

Moreover, during December-January Mhada plans to come up with a lottery draw for around 2,432 flats at Virar’s Bolinj area, and the rest 1251 in various parts of Mumbai.

Speaking about the current government's overall plans for affordable housing, Mehta said that attempts would be made to create 11 lakh affordable houses within Mumbai itself, instead of scattering them across the Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR).

In order to incorporate original Mumbaikars within the metropolis itself, the government has plans to develop affordable housing on port trust land, defence land, no development zones, and government-owned salt pan lands.
