The weaker section group income has been increased from the current Rs12,000 to Rs25,000 per month. The lower income group will be between Rs50,000 and Rs61,000, the middle group will be Rs 61,000-75,000 and the higher group income will be above Rs75,000.
The Maharashtra government has decided to change the income group brackets, so that maximum number of people can buy their dream home under the Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority's (MHADA) affordable housing scheme.

State housing minister Ravindra Waikar told dna that they had prepared the proposal and it will soon be submitted to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis for his final approval. "We want to provide houses to as many people as possible. Due to the rigid income group criteria, many potential buyers were thrown out of the scheme. Besides, over a period of time, people's income has increased," he said.
A senior MHADA official said if anyone wanted to buy a MHADA house, they cannot do so with an income of Rs12,000. "The income group criteria and cost of houses were not matching. Therefore, it was the need of the hour to change the criteria. Construction cost and other input costs for a house has increased. We had no option but to increase the housing prices. We have to be realistic while fixing the price of a house. Only then MHADA's affordable housing model will be sustainable. Otherwise, the system will collapse," the official explained.
Meanwhile, Waikar said they were identifying huge chunks of open spaces across the state to construct a large number of affordable houses. "The government had already asked the respective collectors of the metros of Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur and Kolhapur to identify open and non-encroached land, and submit that list to the state government. We are also tying up with private construction firms. We want to increase the speed of construction. The houses should be constructed in a record period of time. Then only will we be able to cater to the growing demand in the state," he added.
