The 338 homes available in the High Income Group (HIG) of the MHADA lottery received a mere 5,446 applications. It's a small number in contrast to the 9,145 applications received for the eight homes available in the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category. The lottery is to be held on November 10, which offers 819 homes under four categories.

In the other two categories — Lower Income Group (LIG) and Middle Income Group (MIG) — 32,952 and 16,321 applicants showed interest for 168 and 281 homes respectively.

Subhash Lakhe, chief officer of MHADA's Mumbai Board, who is organising the lottery, said, "The bank may have 2,000 to 3,000 cheques pending to be entered into the system so the expected count of total application will be 66,000 to 67,000."

At present, the total figure for the number of applications received by MHADA stands at 78,674 of which 63,864 applicants have paid. In applications made — EWS received 12,439 applications; HIG, MIG and LIG received 6,799, 19,966 and 39,470 applications respectively.

Even if the highest figure being quoted by MHADA for the overall applications is considered, it is yet nearly 50 per cent of the previous year's applications. Last year, 1.35 lakh applicants had paid to participate in the MHADA lottery for around 910 homes.

"All the previous lotteries have shown that the EWS and LIG categories have been the biggest pullers for the MHADA homes. This year, MHADA reduced the number of homes in these two categories which is the reason the number of applications is less.

MHADA should take a cue from this and make amends in the future lottery," said Sanjay Chaturvedi, executive editor, Accommodation Times.
