Deposit amounts from just over 36,000 applicants have come to Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) for its 1,063 homes that are up for sale this May.

According to statistics released by the housing authority, as on Sunday evening, it had received deposit payment from 36,019 applicants out of the 86,652 who have applied for the dwellings.

In all 1,03,326 individuals have registered on their portal (lottery.mhada.gov.in), but the number of applications are relatively low. Those applications without any deposit amount are rejected by Mhada so that they don't form part of the draw of lots.

Mhada officials said that the total number of applications and deposit amount payment will increase substantially during the last couple of days of the deadline. "That is the trend every year. People tend to delay application and payment to the last minute. When the deadline approaches, they demand extension of the same," said an official.

This year, Mhada is unlikely to make extensions to their already set deadlines so that the lottery draw can be conducted on May 31 at Rangsharda Auditorium in Bandra West.

The last day for online registration is May 14 and the last day for online application and online payment is May 18. Those opting to pay through pay order or demand draft can do so till May 20.

There are plans to conduct another housing lottery draw later this year, possibly in December, to sell homes that are under construction at Bolinj in Virar. Around 2,500 apartments are being built in Virar.
