On Tuesday, the newly-appointed president of MHADA, Uday Samant, paid a visit to some of the plots, and chawls where developers and contractors are constructing buildings on land belonging to MHADA.

At one of the sites, Samant while hearing out the problems of the existing tenants, asked MHADA officials to organise a meeting with the developer and to take legal action against them if needed.

Samant started off with Western suburbs where he visited Goregaon, then to Powai, Vikhroli, Mulund and the extended suburbs.

In Mulund, a large group of people was waiting to meet Samant. They alleged that around 608 residents have been staying in transit camps which are now in bad shape. Of the total 1500 tenants, around 900 have been given accommodation. S Kamble, one of the residents said, "Since 2007 we are stuck in transit camps. While some tenants got their flats a few years ago, more than 600 people are still stuck without a permanent home."

While talking to local residents of the transit camps and MHADA officials at Mulund, Samant said, "I am holding a meeting with the developer along with MHADA officials and the residents. If I don't get any satisfactory reply, we will initiate legal action including police action. Residents shouldn't suffer anymore."

Umesh Kamble, vice president of Richa Developers, who is redeveloping the project in Mulund said, "We will attend the meeting and put forth our stand. We have already spent more than Rs 500 crore on the project, and have rehabilitated more than 800 tenants. Yet, not a single flat has been sold. The market condition is bad, and we will try to explain this to the president."
