Starting from August 1 people commuting on the Mumbai Metro will be able to use trip based passes. Commuters opting for such passes will be charged discounted fare.

The authorities have introduced two types of trip based passes — for 45 trips and another for 60 trips between Versova and Ghatkopar (11.4-km). Trip based pass is yet to be introduced in Mumbai Monorail, which is operated between Chembur and Wadala Depot (8.93-km).

"This pass have been conceptualised keeping in view the convenience of daily metro commuters, especially the ones who use metro services to go to their workplaces, schools, colleges and other academic institutes," read a statement released by Mumbai Metro.

The price of 45-trip pass will be Rs 600, whereas 60-trip pass is for Rs 800. Thus, each trip between Versova to Ghatkopar or the other way will be Rs 13.33. At the moment, if an individual travels using tokens, Rs 20 is charged for 11.4-km, and Rs 15 if smart card is used to commute. These fares are valid till September 30.

"While our current store value cards or smart cards offer significant discount on existing travel cost, the trip based passes would further increase the discount and thus make Mumbai Metro the most convenient and cost effective mode of transport," said a Mumbai Metro spokesperson.

In order to avail benefit, a commuter will have to procure a pass by August 31 as it will have a monthly validity. The trip based passes will exist even after that, but the fare may be revised.

Those individuals who already own a smart card can convert it to a trip based pass.
