Metro III project gets approval despite opposition from Shiv Sena, MNS

As per the requirement, MMRCL will require 0.78 hectare of land which translates into 8000 sqmt of land. For this BMC will have to give 17 plots on permanent basis and at least 5 hectare of land, comprising 14 plots will be needed on temporary basis until the project is completed. Despite stiff opposition from Shiv Sena, the ruling alliance in the BMC, the BJP joined hands with Congress and other opposition parties to approve the proposal part with 17 plots to Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) for Metro III project Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ (Andheri).

However, the MNS supported Sena and opposed the proposal saying that citizens will suffer due to this project. The BJP got the proposal through with a majority — 11 votes against 8 votes by Sena-MNS.

As per the requirement, MMRCL will require 0.78 hectare of land which translates into 8000 sqmt of land. For this BMC will have to give 17 plots on permanent basis and at least 5 hectare of land, comprising 14 plots will be needed on temporary basis until the project is completed. The project is targeted to be completed by the year 2020.

Ashwini Bhide, managing director of MMRCL made presentation to the improvement committee members and sought the approval for the parting with land parcels needed for the project. The MMRCL will pay BMC Rs250 crore as charges for using land.

Bhide explained the members that permanent plots will be used for different requirements for Metro stations and other facilities like ventilation shaft, entry and exit points, among others. While, temporary plots will be given back after reinstatement.

While 2,600 families will be directly affected by the project, at least 600-700 families from Girgaum-Kalbadevi area will be rehabilitated in the same vicinity. The MMRCL will buy a land and appoint a consultant for rehabilitation of the families.

Sena and MNS members of improvement committee raised doubt that the building coming in the alignment of the Metro III project will stand to lose chance to go under redevelopment projects in future. However, Bhide clarified the doubts assuring that the no objection certificate will be given to these buildings in the future.

Raju Pednekar, Sena corporator warned the civic authorities and the MMRCL that the cutting out of part of Hutatma Chowk garden will become a burning issue if it damaged the memorial. However, Bhide said that memorial will remain untouched and only part of garden will be taken.
