Mumbaikars will have a tough time during monsoon as the ongoing Metro work at several places across the western suburbs have higher chances of water logging and extreme traffic congestion.

Flood like situations are also expected in some places if the city receives heavy rainfall coupled with any technical problems while flushing out excess water.

At present, Metro 7 corridor work is underway from western suburb to eastern suburb. Civic officials believe that the ongoing Metro work could be troublesome during the monsoon.

Interestingly, the civic administration does have clarity in the locations that could have problems of water logging. "Apart from 313 de-watering pumps, which have already been installed across the city, an additional 24 will be installed. The additional pumps will be installed at spots which witness water logging this monsoon," a senior civic engineer said.

Zoru Bathena, a civic activist, said, "MMRDA has been carrying out the Mumbai Metro works which seem to be moving rapidly. However, civic officials are not aware of any damages to the storm water drains since they are unable to inspect the sites where the metro work is ongoing, citing their inability to interfere in the MMRDA's Metro work."

With the onset of monsoons, instances of water logging were already visible near the SEEPZ Metro construction site. Traffic near the site was moving at a snail's pace for almost three to four hours. Similarly, the Dahisar- DN Nagar Metro line, which is under construction, could also face waterlogging. According to the senior civic official from storm water drain department, places where underground Metro is underway are vulnerable to water logging.

The Metro 3 corridor — Colaba-Bandra-Seepz — is completely underground. Civic engineers will have to shift utilities that have been laid underground.

DNA visited a few sites in the western suburbs and identified spots that could create a aggravate the already existing woes in the city.

DN Nagar, Andheri Linking Road

Dahisar-DN Nagar Metro corridor is under construction due to which the complete stretch can witness waterlogging. According to a BMC official, the Metro barricade has already covered most part of this stretch including near D N Nagar metro station on both sides of the road (one side in some places). The barricade could cause obstruction to the water flow. Dahisar, Malad, Oshiwara, Samarth Nagar and Shahstri Nagar upto DN Nagar are vulnerable spots. At present, due to the barricade, traffic congestion is seen at Linking Road along the Dahisar-DN Nagar Metro corridor, which could deteriorate during heavy rainfall.

Western urban road, Kandivli

Though Mumbai Metro 7 work underway at several places along the Western Urban Road, there are some stretches where possibility of water logging cannot be ruled out during monsoon. From Dahisar East to Andheri East, areas such as Pathan Wadi, Pushpa Park, Bandongri and Mahindra & Mahindra in Kandivali will have problems during heavy rainfall. These parts of the Metro will be elevated via duct. A civic official said, "Even the Western Urban Road is not a low lying area, possibility of water logging and traffic jams cannot be not be ruled out.

Bandra Kurla Complex

Mumbai Metro 3, Colapa-Bandra-Seepz is a fully underground line which needs digging and shifting of utilities. Although work at all locations have not yet begun, contractors will go ahead with work as they are allowed to work during monsoon. The picture shows the Metro 3 construction work carried at BKC near the RBI office. Although the spot is not identified as a chronic water logging spot, the barricades occupy a major part of the road leaving less space for vehicles to pass. If any SWD is damaged in BKC, areas like Santa Cruz, Vile Parle and Andheri will be affected.

Kalanagar, Bandra

Heavy traffic during peak hours is a common sight at Kalanagar. However during monsoons, the area faces water logging and traffic congestion. The picture shows the Metro 3 construction work carried by MMRC in Kalanagar. The site is situated along the Mithi river. Data released by the BMC on June 4 reveals that only 46 per cent of the desilting work at Mithi river is completed in the western suburbs which raises chances of the river flooding during heavy rains. Motorists in Bandra will be the most affected and metro work will add to traffic woes.
