Once 33.5km-long Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ metro rail is ready for public use, it is expected that there will be a reduction of road traffic by 35 per cent. Construction of this metro line is likely to begin sometime in the second half of next fiscal.

Reduction of 35 per cent traffic in this 32.5km-long stretch means that by 2022 there will be 4,56,771 less vehicles on Mumbai's roads on this corridor.

"There will be reduction of fuel consumption by 2,43,390 litres daily," said Ashwini Bhide, managing director, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC).

As the metro rail is a mass rapid transit transportation system, the usage of private vehicles and public buses too will reduce significantly. "This would even mean reduction of pollution levels," added Bhide.

At the moment, it takes anywhere close to two hours to reach the airport from Cuffe Parade. But when this metro line is ready, the same is expected to come down drastically to just 50 minutes.
