When Borivali-based businessman Rakesh Shah took his Mercedes M-class 250 CDI to the company's Andheri service centre for a change of tyres, he did not imagine that the car would be with the service centre for 57 days.
Today, Shah's problem is unsolved; Shah and the company are arguing about whether he should pay for replacement tyres or not.

Shah said that the car is still under warranty and the tyres are defective, so the tyres should be replaced for free. But the company does not agree. In an official statement, the company said, "Standard warranty of Mercedes-Benz doesn't cover tyre damages." The company wants him to pay for replacement tyres.

Shah got the Rs. 60 lakh car in November last year as a gift from his brother. He said that after a few months of use, bubbles formed on the tyres of the car.

"My brother Atin Shah bought the car and gifted it to me on my birthday. It suddenly developed bubbles on the four tyres. I sent the car to the service station. Even after repeated communications to the company, they failed to give me a satisfactory reply. Finally they sent me an email saying that the tyres have no manufacturing defect," Shah said.

Shah said that when he went to collect the car, the company insisted on charging him for new tyres.

He said, "Later I went to collect the car, but they flatly refused it, as they wanted to get all the four tyres replaced (for a charge). But I refused, as the car was under warranty period."

Shah said he would now take the dispute to the consumer court.

Mercedes' official statement
"Standard warranty of Mercedes-Benz doesn't cover tyre damages. Damage to tyre is taken care of by individual tyre manufacturers, Continental in this particular case."
