Men of service: Indian Merchant Chamber confers bravery awards on 12 Mumbai police officers

Acknowledging the Mumbai police's selfless service to the public, the Indian Merchant Chamber (IMC) on Friday felicitated 12 police officers for extraordinary work in their line of duty. The award ceremony was attended by the Commissioner of Police (CP), Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, and Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Deven Bharti along with other top rank police officers.

The Mumbai police in the year 2017 face many challenging situations. But the force never retreated from their duty. Mumbai CP Jaiswal said, "It goes without saying that Mumbaikars love their police force and we are grateful that efforts of our men are being recognised. The state and the city have lost some of the bravest men to Naxal attacks and terror attacks. Such losses are indeed irreparable and non-replaceable. We all love our job and we will definitely continue to work with same diligence and effort."

Award Categories

The awards were given in 12 categories, which included best detection of crime; best conviction of crime; best recovery of property; heroic death while performing duty; most courageous act to safeguard human lives; outstanding work done by traffic department; outstanding work done to curb menace under NDPS Act; best investigation conducted in cyber crime; help provided to victims women & victims juvenile and best investigation done in this direction and innovation plan for better environment or better service in public force.

Raees Mohammed Nazir Shaikh, currently posted in unit 11 of the city crime branch, was stationed at the Borivali Police Station where he was the investigating officer in a rape case of a minor who was mute. “The girl (14) was four months pregnant and her foetus was aborted since she was a minor. We faced many difficulties to get leads in the case due to communication problems and we had taken help from experts. The girl later hinted that a labourer working at a construction site took undue advantage of her disability. The site-owner and manager were questioned and after interrogating each and every worker, the accused was nabbed from UP’s Vishrampur district,” said Shaikh.

Most courageous act applied to safeguard human lives

Constable Sudarshan Shinde put his life at stake to save those who were trapped in the Kamala Mills fire, which claimed 14 lives on December 29 in 2017. Shinde, who was on patrolling duty nearby, rushed to the spot to getting information about the mishap. He said, “After I reached the spot, I saw some persons trapped inside the pub turned on the torchlights in their mobile phones, we broke the emergency exit door and went inside without any fire protective gear.” Recounting what happened further inside the pub, Shinde said, “When I reached upstairs, everything was burnt and charred. I could only hear explosion sounds. Some fire officials and I managed to rescue eight people.”

Heroic death while preforming duty

When 43-year-old Ajay Prabhakar Gawand, a mobile beat marshal of the police, received a call from the south region control of police about some thieves at a building at P D’mello Road in Dongri, he rushed to the spot along with five other policemen. The thieves locked the door of the terrace and started pelting stones at the officers. When Gawand told them to surrender, the thieves hit him mercilessly on the head with a wooden plank. Gawand was rushed to JJ Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. His wife, Swati Gawand said, “My husband’s death did not go in vain as the criminal was apprehended. My son, Harsh aspires to be just as brave and join the Indian Army.”
