MMRDA opened the bids for construction of the 350-foot-long Dr Babasaheb Memorial in Oct
For a second time in a row, only one company has shown interest in the construction of the 350-foot-long Dr Bababsaheb Ambedkar Memorial off the Arabian Sea. On Thursday, bids for construction of the Ambedkar Memorial were opened and only one bidder expressed interest.
Prior to this, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is executing the project had floated bids in April 2017 and opened on October 27 in which only the Shapoorji Pallonji Group had shown interest.
Pravin Darade, Additional Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, said, "At this stage we do not know the reason for getting poor response. But we have opened the technical bids for evaluation after which we will open the financial bids as it was the second call.
We will decide if we need to go for re-bidding or award the contract to the sole idder."
The MMRDA had floated the bids globally, however, none of the international companies showed interest.
The construction of the memorial on the 12-acre Indu Mill land was stuck for several years due to the transfer of land from the Central government to state government.
However, the Centre through the National Textile Corporation (NTC) transferred the 12-acre Indu Mill land to the state government on March 25, 2017.
DNA had reported on November 3, 2017 about the construction cost of the memorial going up —from Rs 435 crore back then to Rs 622 crore — for the fourth time in the past two years.
The MMRDA has plans to build an auditorium, a meditation area and a pond along with the memorial. The auditorium will have a seating capacity of around 800 people, and also a museum, library, garden and parking space for visitors.
