Congress leaders have decided to go on a one-day hunger strike today in front of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) office in Belapur. The reason behind the strike can be termed as impatience among the leaders as the construction work of Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial, which has been going on from quite a few years in Airoli is still incomplete.
The strike will start at 10am and end at 5pm. It will be held under the leadership of district Congress chief Dashrath Bhagat. Other members like Congress corporators, all committee members and followers of Babasaheb Ambedkar will also be present at the venue.
NMMC received the contract of developing the memorial at plot No22 A, sector 15, Airoli. This proposal was approved on April 6, 2011.The contract was given to NMMC on January 6, 2011, with a written statement that the construction work has to be completed within 24 months, which was supposed to be April 5, 2013. However, 50% work is still incomplete.
The delay in construction work has been creating violence among Navi Mumbaikars apart from more money being money spent and corruption in the work. The delay in work means disrespecting Ambedkar, due to which people are getting violent and demanding pace in work.
On one hand, the construction work of NMMC’s other buildings is surprisingly fast, but with sad quality of construction. On the other hand, the construction work of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial is incomplete and slow.
Congress committee members had a word with the commissioner of NMMC on January 8 to discuss the issue. Though orders have been given to complete the construction of the memorial fast, the issue has not been taken seriously by the commissioner. Also, there was no satisfactory response. Therefore, strike is the only way to achieve the goal, feel party members.
