Ashish Prabhakar Phatak will have the privilege of running the country’ latest “crown” — Mumbai Monorail — out of Wadala station on Saturday. He will be assisted by Farid Alam Shaikh. They will be the first to ride the rake after chief minister Prithviraj Chavan flags off the official run of the country’s first monorail on Saturday.
On Friday, last minute preparations were being made at Wadala Car Depot by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Scomi and Larsen & Toubro officials to ensure it is a grand and smooth affair on Saturday.
During the second half of Friday, the decision was made on who should drive the train.
Ashish is among the group of first few monorail captains who were hired a year ago, whereas Farid was recruited recently. They were imparted training on Friday afternoon to welcome the guests, including the chief minister.
Ashish will have control in the cabin, whereas Farid will be an observer or back up. Chavan will flag off the first phase at Wadala at 3 pm. Then he will travel by the monorail to Chembur to proceed to Mahatma Gandhi Maidan to declare the project “Open”. The monorail corridor will be thrown open to public from 7am on Sunday wherein trains will depart at the same time from either ends.
