On an assignment to Kerala in 2012, Anand Shinde found his love for elephants and that is what changed his life forever. While toying with a story idea for his next shoot, Anand decided to click elephants, that finally became his career. Anand a Thane resident, is a budding elephant whisperer, who can communicate with elephants, and runs the Trunk Call Foundation that works for conservation of elephants. Anand recalls how he started to get used to the language of the elephants and how amused he was with it. “The first time I got the sound right, I remember the ecstatic look on the baby elephant’s face as it was able to understand my rumbling,” Anand recalls. Over a period of time he learnt to communicate with an elephant and was able to know about a fracture in this leg also.

Anand credits his family for supporting him in going ahead with his passion without thinking about the financial constraints. Anand tries to ensure that most of the conservation work taken up by the Trunk Call Foundation is self-funded. He also works with the Kerala government, helping them in their effort to save the baby elephants. Anand works on freelance projects for 15 days a month in Mumbai and spend 15 days in Kerala, where he helps baby elephants as well as deliver lectures to tourists on issues related to conservation.

Shinde raises funds for the foundations by selling pictures of the elephants, apart from clay models and other items that can be bought. While he is able to understand elephants, there is still a long way to go for him as an elephant whisperer. He is learning voice patterns and behaviour of elephants by listening to their voice recordings.

Trunk Call Foundation can be contacted by sending a mail to trunkcallfoundation@gmail.com.
