The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) released a list of around 750 candidates who were regarded as ineligible for medical admissions under the state quota after verification of documents. Fate of another 396 students who have passed their class X outside Maharashtra but took their class XII board in the state is yet to be decided as the Aurangabad bench of Bombay High Court is hearing a review petition filed by a group of parents pleading that such students should not be eligible for state quota.

Earlier this week, some parents raised the issue of a 'dual domicile scam' as they claimed to have found the names of several students who had applied for the Maharashtra State Quota also applied in quota lists of other states.

DMER officials, however, denied that such a scam took place and said that students who were not able to produce documents required for the state quota were declared ineligible. "Over 50 thousand students applied for admissions this year of which documents of 20 thousand ranks who were eligible for admissions this year were verified. We found that close to 750 of them did not have any requisite documents for the state quota. These candidates have thus been deemed ineligible" said Dr Pravin Shingare, Director, Medical Education and Research.

Parents, however, said that the admission process lacked transparency and demanded a fair inquiry in the allegations about dual domiciles. "DMER should have looked at the documents of all the students who have applied for admissions this year. Also, the lists should be more comprehensive with details of all the places where the student has applied will be available to ensure transparency," said Sudha Shenoy, a parent. The DMER in a notice put up on the official website stated that the first list, which was supposed to be declared on the 25, has been postponed until further notice.
