Various locations on the western coast of Mumbai have always been a destination for tourists, but sadly this has not been the case on the eastern front. However, this is about to change as the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) has planned to come up with a 10-km long waterfront walkway apart from Eco Park, Gardens, among others.

Government office spaces too are planned on the land that will soon become vacant when dry cargo activity gradually becomes minimal. "We have lots of plans to develop the eastern waterfront of Mumbai. Whatever waterfront areas for public are there, are on the western side of Mumbai be it Marine Drive, Worli, Chowpatty, Bandra, Juhu, etc," said Sanjay Bhatia, chairman of Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT).

Sharing the plan during an event on Monday afternoon, Bhatia mentioned that in next seven to eight months work for a 10-km long walkway will commence so that Mumbaikars where they can come relax, jog, families can play with their children, etc.

Soon, a private consultancy firm will be appointed to chalk out details of the various recreational spaces planned on the port land. "The plans for Eco Park, Walkway, Marina, International Cruise Terminal, Garden, Tourist Village, etc. are part of the first phase of the project," said Bhatia.

In order to have open spaces for Mumbaikars and develop port land in south Mumbai, there are plans afoot not to renew leases of plot given out to private companies or individuals. These plots will be taken back by MbPT for the grand plan, that has been there on paper for decades now.

"When I took charge two months ago, there were as many as nine reports on port land development. Now, we are in the midst of preparing a final master plan for the same and it should be ready in the next few weeks," added Bhatia.
