Even as the city faces an acute shortage of hospitals, there is some reason to cheer. The Union government-run Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) has decided to set up a medical college and hospital at its premises in Wadala. The project report for the Rs1,000-crore hospital is ready, and is awaiting a final nod from the Ministry of Shipping. If everything goes as per plan, then within two years, people should get a chance to visit this super-speciality hospital.

MbPT has a huge tract of land in Wadala, of which 11.5 acres has been set aside for this hospital. As per the plan, MbPT is planning to set up a 950-bedded hospital in the same place where their 260-bedded hospital setup already exists. The current hospital setup is very old, and will be demolished in phases.

Yashodhar Wange, Vice Chairman, MbPT, confirmed the move to set up the new medical college and hospital. MbPT sources said that concessions will be offered to Port Trust employees as well as the general public.

Recently, transport minister Nitin Gadkari had expressed a wish to give good quality treatment to employees and general public who reside in the area. He felt a need to set up a multi-speciality hospital along with a medical college, so as to bring about an increase in the number of doctors being produced.

In most medical colleges, treatment charges are lower than those of private hospitals.

MbPT, after getting approval from the Ministry, will float a tender for the new hospital, and will have the preliminary site inspection done by the Medical Council of India (MCI).

In the eastern suburbs, there are only two superspeciality private hospitals- Fortis Hospital at Mulund, and Godrej Hospital at Vikhroli. If the patient's relatives are not able to get their patient admitted to these hospitals for some reason, including financial issues or due to unavailability of beds, then the last resort is civic-run Sion Hospital. When the MbPT hospital at Wadala is ready, it will provide a great relief for people residing along the Harbour line, because Wadala is centrally located.

Dr Jayesh Lele, President Elect, Indian Medical Association, Maharashtra Branch, said, "It's a great move to start a medical college and hospital at Wadala, and this will definitely help people."
