Mazgaon school to turn 'swachh', segregate waste

In a unique initiative, St Mary’s School (ICSE) at Mazgaon will soon be following segregation of wet and dry waste in their school premises. The school is planning to bring a machine that will separate wet and dry waste generated in the school. This is to encourage everyone, including students, to follow the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Recently, the school was visited by a local Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official deputed for Swachh Bharat Abhiyan mission. He gave lessons on dry and wet waste segregation to the teachers and staff of the school. The officer also encouraged everyone from staff to use the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan mobile application. The teachers will now impart this knowledge with the school students. The school have planned to practice the segregation of waste and use that manure for their own school’s trees and maintain greenery.

Fr Francis Swamy, principal of the school said, “We are thinking of bringing the machine that will segregate wet and dry waste. Last week an officer from BMC visited our school and gave our teachers and school staff knowledge of wet and dry waste. He also showed the app of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan which is downloaded by all our teachers and staff. These teachers will now impart the knowledge given by BMC official with students. These students will encourage every their parents to download this app so that cleanliness drive starts in their residential societies as well."

Mamta Khandelwal, treasurer, Parents Teachers Association of the school, said, “The students will now practice the knowledge imparted by teachers in school. The students will dump waste in two different bins separated for dry waste and wet waste. The school has made arrangements of these dustbins in the school premises.”
