Even as scanty rainfall has left officials from the hydraulic engineering department a worried lot, the BMC plans to go ahead with a public awareness campaign, however, sans a popular face.

Instead, mayor Sunil Prabhu and civic chief Sitaram Kunte are likely to lead the campaign.

When the city faced similar crisis in 2009, the BMC had roped in cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar to urge people towards saving water. This year, the civic body is mulling an extended awareness campaign.

"Normally, campaigns led by celebrities last for a transit period. However, the civic body is planning for a longer awareness campaign this time. Hence, we felt those people should lead campaigns who reach out to people to solve their problems. Hence, Prabhu and Kunte were the best options," a senior civic official said.

When asked, Prabhu confirmed to have received the letter, which was approved during group leaders' meeting. He added, "We don't like to be called as brand ambassador exactly, but idols. We are no celebrity, but public servants who deal with the public's concerns on a day-to-day basis. So, we will reach out to the public again, urging them to save water."

Kunte said that finding a celebrity at this juncture would be time consuming and hence, the decision has been taken. "We are yet to chalk out the plan in detail. Let's see what materialises."

As reported by dna earlier, the BMC has planned an awareness campaign in view of the water crisis. As part of the same, the corporation plans to reach out to the public via social media like YouTube and advanced locality management (ALMs).

Meanwhile, the group leaders have also approved a demand to name a proposed medical college, to come up near Cooper hospital in Jogeshwari east, after late Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray.
