Almost a year after Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis announced Bal Thackeray memorial to be built at mayor's bungalow near Shivaji Park in Dadar, the committee appointed by the state government submitted a report to the CM approving for the same.

The committee headed by chief secretary Swadhin Kshatriya visited several sites in Mumbai but finalised the mayor's bungalow for the memorial. Kshatriya confirmed the development saying that the public trust will be registered soon and that will look after the memorial. "We studied various models of the trust and zeroed down to Yashwant Rao Chavan trust located at Nariman Point. It will have minimum seven and maximum 11 members and the trust will be controlled by the government. Other formalities will be done by the law and judiciary department of the state government," he added.

Kshariya further confirmed that they will maintain the heritage structures as it is. "We will not pull down the existing heritages structure. We studied various things and then only submitted the report. Now, the authority has to take the final decision to implement it," he said. The mayor's resident will be shifted to some other location in Mumbai once the bungalow gets developed as a memorial.

After the Shiv Sena supremo's demise, the party leaders and workers demanded for the grand memorial of Bal Thackeray. Fadnavis had also ensured that the memorial will be constructed in Dadar.

The Congress party however opposed the government's decision of constructing the memorial at the mayor's bungalow in Dadar. "If the Sena has real love for its leader then they should convert the Sena supremo Bal Thackeray's resident Matoshree into the memorial. That will be a real tribute to late Bal Thackeray's work. He stayed at Matoshree for more than 40 years while the mayor's bungalow has been used by the constitution post authority. It would be wrong to convert the mayor's bungalow into the memorial. If they do not want to convert the Matoshree into memorial, then a fresh piece of land needs to identified as Sena leaders have got enough money to buy the land for the Bal Thackeray memorial," said a Congress leader from Mumbai.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena headed by Raj Thackeray also opposed the state government's move of constructing the memorial at the mayor's bungalow. The BMC bought the bungalow in 1962 and Dr B P Devgi was the first mayor to use it, from 1964-65 as the Mayor's official residence.

Bal Thackeray founded the Shiv Sena in 1966 to fight for the right of Marathi Manoos-- son of the soil and turned it into a major political force in state politics. Thackeray started his career as a cartoonist and always critical about the Congress government's policies.
