The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken another step to sort the mess outside Kurla, Mumbai Central and Bandra railway stations.

Based on the detailed project report (DPR) to develop Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme (SATIS) at these three railway stations, a survey on establishments near these stations that need to be shifted has already begun. Transport and road connectivity in these areas will greatly improve once the pedestrian, as well as vehicular movement, is streamlined under this scheme.

As part of the SATIS project, the BMC will make certain changes and will connect the foot-over-bridge with the bus stand similar to Thane railway station. However, a senior BMC official said that shifting commercial establishments near the railway station will be a difficult task as they have been doing their business since 1960 in Kurla.

Last year, the civic body had appointed a consultant to study and prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for developing SATIS at these stations.

"Earlier, the civic body had planned to develop SATIS on the lines of Thane station where it was implemented in 2009 only at Kurla station. Mumbai Central and Bandra railway stations were included in the project later," said a senior civic official.

Like Thane, Kurla, Mumbai Central and Bandra stations witness huge footfall of commuters from the Central and Western line. "The premises of these stations are one of the most congested with footfall as well as vehicular movements," said an official from the bridges department of BMC.

With Bandra and Kurla being the nearest railway station to Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), which is a commercial hub housing many national and multinational companies, lakhs of office-goers jostle for space in the area. As per the MMRDA report, around 1.5 lakh people commute to BKC every day, and around 20,000 vehicles ply in and out of the commercial hub.

Similarly, many long-route trains including Rajdhani Express originate and terminate at Mumbai Central. It also witnessed a huge inflow of tourists due to its close proximity to tourist places.

The project got approval from the BMC in 2014-15. However, it was delayed due to various reasons including coordination among different agencies.

WHAT’S SATIS

Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme (SATIS) is aimed at easing commuter and pedestrian movement by building skywalks, foot over bridges, separate parking areas for auto-rickshaws and taxis at four crowded suburban railway stations. One of such has been developed at Thane station
