Maximum accident, assault cases attended from Mumbai: Bike ambulance data

In over one year of its launch, the state government's medical emergency bike ambulance service has received nearly 7,318 calls in the city out of 9,967 calls across the state of Maharashtra. The city-based bike ambulance has attended a maximum number of cases related to the vehicle accident, assault, burn, cardiac, mass casualty and suicide cases.

The bike ambulance service is aimed at providing medical support during golden hour till the four-wheeler ambulance reaches the spot.

Recently 108 received a call from Borivali West and was informed about a 65-year-old diabetic patient who was unconscious. While a bike ambulance from a police station near Thakur Village was dispatched, on examination the paramedic staff found that the blood sugar level was 56, Dextrose was given and the patient responded. Meanwhile, 108 ambulances reached an incident place and shifted the patient to the hospital for further management.

As per the Mumbai data shared by the Maharashtra Emergency Medical Service (MEMS), they have served medical service to 340 accident cases in the city compared to 385 cases across the state, 28 assault cases, 11 burn injuries, 68 cardiac cases, 11 mass casualty, and five suicide cases.

Dr Dnyaneshwar Shelke, the chief operating officer of 'MEMS- Dial 108', said, "In Mumbai, the bike ambulance has helped us to better our response time in order to reach the slum areas during an emergency. The golden hour response has bettered in narrow roads and bylanes of the city till the time four wheeler ambulance reaches. Even in other districts' tribal area where road connectivity is a problem, we have managed to reach the spot with the help of bike ambulance."

Besides this, over 3832 medical general ailment cases, 2718 other cases in the city.

In Mumbai, there is 18 bike ambulance which was launched in August 2017. In other districts - Palghar and Amravati have five bike ambulance each, Solapur and Gadchiroli have one bike ambulance each.

As per the MEMS authority, it becomes very difficult to respond to an emergency due to heavy traffic and narrow roads in the city.
