In a heartwarming case, the Matunga police on Saturday made an elderly woman's day special by celebrating her birthday at her residence. The gesture was a part of the Mumbai police's effort to ensure safety of senior citizens living alone in the city.
Lalitha Subramaniyum (82), living alone at her Matunga residence, was in for a surprise when senior police inspector B M Kakad, along with 20-25 other policemen, turned up at house with a cake. Subramaniyum has three children – a son and a daughter settled in the US and another son in Bengaluru.
"We keep coming and going around here. We help aunty and other senior citizens in Matunga, whenever needed, and take care of them. Watching out for them is something that we've been doing for a long time," said Kakad.
Subramaniyum came in contact with the Matunga police in 1991, when she had approached them regarding a case and they have been in contact ever since. Overwhelmed with the gesture of the Matunga police, Subramaniyum said, "I'm touched. Nobody has ever done anything like this for me. I loved every bit of it."
