In addition to pushing the limits of one's endurance, runners believe that participating in a marathon enables each one to compete with themselves. Participants range from casual runners, to experts from the medical and education fields.
One of the runners, Dr Sudhir Pillai, a cardiologist at Hinduja Hospital, said: "I run because it has taught me to be fearless. It inspires me to compete with myself and not with others."
Echoing Pillai's sentiments, Alice Vaz, principal of Ryan International School, Kharghar added: "I think running also teaches one team work."
Dr Sandeep Goyle, an oncologist at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital, is another regular at the marathon. He said: "The marathon is a way of life, a means to improve one's health, confidence and self-esteem."
Dr Samir Dalwai, trustee at Goregaon English School in Goregaon (E) is of the belief that a marathon is an excellent opportunity to restructure one's life. "I have many friends who, in spite of a busy schedule, practice for, and run marathons. It takes inspiration, determination, planning, dedication, discipline and perseverance. All this helps physical as well as mental fitness."
