Recently, we had reported about the growing menace that is taking root in Charkop and the plethora of problems that have been plaguing Sector 8. These problems are centred on the encroachment and burning of Charkop’s mangroves, drug peddling, over-speeding and illegal hawking. In order to raise awareness about these problems and the lack of action by various authorities, a marathon had been organised in Charkop.

For the love of mangroves

This marathon, which was conducted by Sector 08 Vikas Samiti and Save Art, saw massive participation—around 1,000 participants ran for the love of mangroves as was proven by the tagline that said—‘mass run for vikas’.
Mili Shetty, who belongs to the Samiti, said, “The chief guest for the marathon was MP Gopal Shetty and he has promised that he will assist us in every way to eliminate existing problems. He has, in fact, asked all of us to meet or call him whenever his help or guidance is required. We had also invited the entire team of the Charkop Fire Brigade, few officers from the R/South ward and officers of the Charkop Police Station.”

Fighting mangrove fires

The Samiti and Save Art also felicitated fire fighters from the Charkop Fire Brigade as they have always been cooperative and forthcoming when it comes to extinguishing fires in the mangroves, which happen quite often.
Shetty added, “We want to bring awareness about these issues amongst the authorities and request them to take action against the perpetrators as well as find lasting solutions for the same. Since this marathon proved to be a huge success, I think that this would now bring about some change.”

The marathon saw participation of 1,000 runners, whereas approximately 3,000 people turned up to see the participants run. The runners were divided into three categories: eight km, four km and three km. The marathon also witnessed maximum participation from senior runners, with the oldest one being a 78-year-old gentleman.
