As the country gears up to celebrate its independence day, the Mumbai Police have received intelligence inputs that terrorists might carry out an air-borne strike at Mantralaya in South Mumbai on August 15.

This information comes barely a week after a similar threat to the city’s airport.

The Intelligence Bureau has warned that a remote-controlled microlite aircraft and paragliders might be used to target the secretariat.

The police have already alerted the directorate-general of civil aviation. The personnel of Marine Drive, DB Marg, Colaba, Cuffe Parade Azad Maidan police stations have been directed to keep a close watch on suspicious elements. They have also been asked to look for suspicious flying objects.

On Tuesday, an inter-departmental order was issued by deputy commissioner of police, operations, KG Patil, to all the authorities. They have been asked to be on guard against a possible terror strike on Mantralaya. Patil has also warned about a possible breach of peace on that day.

“VIPs, army, navy and air force officers and citizens gather at Mantralaya on I-Day to take part in the flag-hoisting ceremony. Hence, it is necessary that checks should be put on activities around Mantralaya and on the air space. This is a preventive measure,” Patil added.

“Apprehending that terrorist elements might strike Mantralaya, additional forces like Quick Response Team and State Reserve Police Force will also be roped in for bandobast duty and anti-sabotage checks will be conducted in the area,” Patil said.

Police commissioner Satyapal Singh has ordered more police deployment across the metropolis. The police are even checking wares being sold by hawkers in the area. The number of nakabandis has also been increased.

Plain-clothes men too will be deployed in the area.

Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport has already been put on high alert following a call made from Pakistan threatening about a blast in the city around the Independence Day.
