Two days after the cylinder blast in Mankhurd that killed 3 people, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, MP Ramdas Athawale visited the site of mishap and announced Rs 1 lakh to the family of the deceased. On Saturday, Athawale visited the spot in Maharashtra Nagar where four houses had collapsed after a cylinder blast on Thursday morning in which 3 people lost their lives and 14 were injured.

Speaking to DNA, Athawale said, “People here have built houses but the construction is not strong enough as they lack finances. The government has the SRA (Slum Rehabilitation Authority) scheme and it should be applied here at the earliest. The implementation of SRA schemes is moving very slowly. The slums have to be demolished for building stronger structures otherwise the poor construction in the slums will lead to similar accidents”.

Adding on hurdles in the SRA scheme Athawale said, “We need to solve disputes amongst builders and allocate areas to them. However, people should also not demand changing the developer again and again. If implementation of the SRA scheme is difficult for the state government, then they should increase the height of the shanties up to 18 feet.”

“The Republican Party of India (A) is giving financial help of Rs 1 lakh to the Wankhede family and the money will reach them within 3 to 4 days. I will ask the state government to provide financial help and educational support to the children whose parents died in the blast.”

In the mishap early on Thursday morning, four families were affected. The three deaths were from the Wankhede family. The family of five stayed on the ground floor next to the house where the cylinder burst. However, their house also collapsed and Sanjay Wankhede (35), Rekha Wankhede (30) and Katurbha Wankhede (60) were declared brought dead at the Shatabdi hospital. Sanjay and Rekha’s children, Plasik Wankhede (4) and Vishakha Wankhede (11) survived with burn injuries. Vishakha has been discharged from Shatabdi Hospital, but Plasik is still under treatment for severe burn injuries in Sion Hospital. Out of the 14 injured in the incident, three have been discharged and the rest are still under treatment.
