Talking about his rival Narayan Rane's absence for the function to mark his first day as Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president, Ashok Chavan on Monday said he was not aware why Rane could not make it to the function.

Outgoing state unit president Manikrao Thakare handed over the charge to Chavan. While addressing party workers at the state unit headquarters in Dadar's Tilak Bhavan, Chavan said he always worked for the party and never had his own faction within it.

"I am not aware if he is unhappy, nor do I know why he did not attend the function," Chavan said, informing media persons that he had a phone conversation with Rane on Sunday and he had given him best wishes for the new post.

Earlier, all party bigwigs from the state, including former home minister Sushilkumar Shinde, presiding officer of the state legislative council Shivajirao Deshmukh, Thakare, and former ministers Patangrao Kadam and Harshawardhan Patil were present for the function. Also, party workers from all over the state thronged Tilak Bhavan to greet Chavan.

While addressing them, Chavan said without going into what went wrong that led to the party's defeat in elections, Congress will work as a constructive opposition in the state. He added that the party will not hesitate to take it to the streets for opposing the new land acquisition bill, which, he said, was anti-farmer. He alleged that the government was deliberately working towards polarising the atmosphere in the state.

All praise for Anna
New MPCC president Ashok Chavan praised anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare, who had launched agitations time and again against various scams in the Congress-NCP rule. Chavan said he had met Hazare in Delhi and told him that he respects him. He added that even though Hazare and Congress do not share platforms, both are opposing the land acquisition bill and Congress will also launch an agitation against it.
