Mangala Express derails, 3 dead

Over 30 hurt; probe ordered; services on route to resume today.

Three people were killed and more than 30 others injured, 20 of them seriously, when 13 coaches of the 12618 Nizamuddin-Ernakulam Mangala Lakshadeep Express derailed at Ghoti near Igatpuri junction early on Friday.

The incident took place around 6:25am when the train was passing through the Ghoti-Igatpuri section, about 35 kms from Nashik, a Central Railway (CR) spokesperson said.

Two of the deceased have been identified as Satya Bir Singh, 40, a resident of Pathoda in Haryana, and  Raju Kushwaha, 34, a resident of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh. The third person is yet to be identified. Among the injured, two were infants.

Around 6.25am residents of Ghoti heard a huge noise and woke up to find that 13 bogies of the Mangala Express were thrown off the track.

The impact was so huge that 12 bogies behind the engine smashed against each other. Five bogies were thrown 50 feet apart. The worst-hit bogies were S-8, S-9, S-10, S-11 as they were thrown on the opposite side falling apart on the service road and paddy fields.

Officials said an inquiry under the Commissioner of Railway Safety has been ordered.

Following the mishap, rail traffic on the up side was affected, forcing authorities to cancel many trains, including LTT-Manmad Rajyarani Express, CSTM-Manmad Panchavati Express, CSTM-Bhusawal passenger train and Nanded-CSTM-Tapovan Express.Twenty other trains were either terminated or diverted through the Kalyan-Pune-Daund-Manmad route, the officials said.

Senior officials rushed to the spot early in the morning but work on clearing the tracks was going on till late in the evening.

The railway officials converted the Godaan Express into a replacement train and sent it from Kurla at 8.02 am.

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and the railways have arranged 35 buses to take the passengers to Igatpuri station.
