A day after a 21-year-old man was arrested for forcing his ex-girlfriend to drink acid in Gorai, a metropolitan court has sent the accused to police custody till October 24. According to the Gorai police, the accused, Jitendra Sakpal, used a toilet cleaning agent to attack the victim.

On Tuesday, Sakpal took the girl for a walk in Gorai. There he asked the 18-year-old to rekindle their relationship. When the girl refused, he held the girl’s mouth and forced the acid. But it spilled over her face. A few people in the vicinity caught Sakpal and later took the girl to the hospital.

“The girl’s condition is improving. She is not in a position to give any statement,” said Deepak Bagawe, senior PI of Gorai police.

Doctors at the Thunga Hospital, Mira road, said that the girl has sustained 9-10%  burns in her face. However, internal injuries are yet to be assessed. “She is in the ICU. Her external injuries are not very serious. Only after an endoscopy can we assess the internal damage. We have to find out whether her food wipe or wind pipe is damaged,” said a doctor.

“We have sent the liquid to  the Kalina forensic lab,” added Bagawe.

The relatives of the girl said that the accused had been harassing. Sakpal, a hotel management graduate, and the victim were residents of Kajupada area in Dahisar.

The two were in a relationship but broke up six-months ago after the girl’s parents expressed their displeasure over the affair.

Sakpal, however, continued to contact her and tried to befriend her.
