The Agripada police have arrested a 40-year-old man who was allegedly involved in stealing jewellery from Jain temples in south Mumbai. The accused has been identified as Naresh Doshi, a resident of Agripada.

According to the police, the accused would specifically go to Jain temples and after the prayers, he would steal silver and gold items like idols and utensils from the temples. The accused told the police that he ran a business of metals. When this did not convince the officers, he claimed he was stealing the items to take care of his household expenses.

"We had recently received a complaint from a temple in Agripada that a silver table and idols are missing. We scrutinised the CCTV footage of the temple in which Doshi was seen stealing the silver idols. We immediately swung into action and arrested the accused. He is a repeat offender however he claims that he stole to finance the education of his two children," said a police officer from Agripada police station.

The Azad Maidan police too had recently received a complaint from a Jain temple in south Mumbai about several missing silver items following which a case was registered in the police station. "We have taken him into custody on Sunday and are trying to recover the stolen items," said Vasant Wakhare, Senior Police Inspector, Azad Maidan police station.

Several cases have been registered against Doshi in three to four police stations in south Mumbai and the police are interrogating him to ascertain if he has committed theft in other parts of the city as well.
