A resident of Dadar has registered a complaint with the Khar police for a diamond ring that was allegedly stolen by a man she met over a matrimonial site. The woman met the accused, who identified himself as Aryan Patel, at a cafe in Khar.

The 28-year-old approached the police on Wednesday and informed them that she had been in touch with Patel through social media.

"The woman has revealed in her complaint that they had met for the first time. In the course of the conversations that followed, Patel said he liked her diamond ring and asked her to take it off so that he can get a closer look," said a Khar police officer.

"Later, on the pretext of talking over the cellphone, Patel stood up and left the cafe," he said.

"The victim waited for an hour and even tried to contact Patel, but failed. She then realised that her ring has been stolen and that Patel is a conman," said the officer.

"We have registered a case under section 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code," said the officer.
