A man, accused of stabbing his pregnant wife to death five days ago, was arrested by the Ghaziabad police on Wednesday morning. He had dumped her body in a drain in the Crossings Republik area after stuffing the body in a sack, the police said.

According to the police, the arrested accused has been identified as Rajeev Poddar, a native of the Vijay Nagar area in Ghaziabad. The police said that the accused was arrested near ABES college.

The police said that a body of a 28-year-old woman was found stuffed in a sack inside a drain in Crossings Republik on August 25. Locals informed the police following which it was taken to police custody and was sent for a post-mortem examination.

Two days later, the police identified the woman as Sanjana. The police then registered a case under sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 201 (causing the disappearance of evidence of offence) of the Indian Penal Code against the unidentified person and launched an investigation in the case.

"Upon investigating the case, it was revealed that the woman was murdered by her husband after a heated argument broke out between them on the night of the incident. The accused told police that his wife was pregnant and the fight was initiated over the unborn child. Following the argument, the man stabbed his wife to death in a fit of anger," said Manisha Singh, Circle Officer-I, Ghaziabad.
