The Mumbra police on Monday arrested a 22-year-old for allegedly stabbing a 30-year-old man with a sharp object after he confronted him from harassing his sister. Following the incident, the victim — identified as Ahmed Shaikh (30), a resident of Mumbra's Kausa area — was shifted to Sion hospital where his condition is said to be critical.

The victim got into an altercation with the main accused Samar Sayyed (22) after the former's sister informed him that she was being repeatedly harassed by the latter. The altercation soon turned ugly when Sayyed took a sharp object and stabbed Shaikh on his hand, face and abdomen. Shaikh was rushed to Kalwa hospital from where he was shifted to Sion hospital owing to the seriousness of his injuries.

"The girl was being harassed by the accused. When her brother confronted Sayyed, he attacked him with a sharp weapon leading to severe injuries which could have been fatal," said a police official from Mumbra police station.

"The moment we received the complaint we arrested Sayyed and have registered him under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult) and 34 (common intent) of the Indian Penal Code. The accused has been remanded to police custody till May 27," said Dilip Jadhav, assistant inspector, Mumbra police station.
