If their marriage on Valentine's Day was a perfect beginning for Ujjwala and Ramdas Sanas, their upcoming 25th wedding anniversary on Saturday just got very special. Doctors at Global Hospital have made it possible for Ujjwala to donate her kidney to Ramdas, who suffers from an end-stage kidney ailment, despite mismatch in their blood groups.

"This is the most precious gift my wife has given me," said an emotional Ramdas, 49, who has so far undergone over 80 dialysis cycles, on the eve of his transplant procedure on Friday. A year ago, the Vidyavihar resident visited doctors for swellings in his legs. Tests revealed that he had severe kidney failure.

Dr Bharat Shah, director at institute of renal sciences, Global Hospital, said, "When Ujjwala came forward to donate her kidney, we found out that their blood groups didn't match. In a normal scenario, this would have pushed him to the back of a long queue of patients waiting for cadaveric donation, or look for the complicated kidney swapping option."

However, the doctors decided to capitalise on the advancements in medical field to transplant Ujjwala's kidney into her husband's body. Ramdas was put through a treatment to bring down the number of antibodies, which do not let a transplanted kidney function in case of blood group incompatibility.

"Since Ramdas has 'O' Blood group his body will develop antibodies for blood group 'A' on kidney transplantation. To avoid rejection, we gave a treatment to bring down antibodies to the desired level," said Dr Shah.

Dr Shah said said that incompatible kidney transplants are becoming popular and comprise about 25 per cent of kidney transplants done by him. "Apart from waiting for cadaver donation, the patient has to undergo dialysis, which is very cumbersome. Incompatible kidney transplant is a new hope for such patients." The procedure will cost the Sanas family about Rs11 lakhs.

"My husband and his brother have similar blood groups. But his brother wasn't ready for donation. There was no one else in the family to donate a kidney. That's when doctors suggested us go for the incompatible kidney transplantation," said 42-year-old Ujjwala. The couple has a son and two daughters.

The Sanas couple will be wheeled into the operation theatre on the eve of Valentine's Day. Ramdas said, "Every year, we celebrate Valentine's day at home together. This time, my wife has me a new life. In last one year, I have undergone 82 dialysis cycles. I will get freedom from that misery because of her."
