Can someone deliberately run over puppies and go scot-free in Mumbai? Apparently they can.
About a month ago, the resident doctors of Parel's Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital welcomed nine new kids on the block. The puppies and their mother were regularly fed and cared for. On Wednesday, one of them lay dead in front of their eyes.
According to a witness, Alex Kurian, who also resides in the hospital's residential complex, was seen boarding his car, and then honking at the puppies, who were sleeping near the wheels. When the pups did not respond, Kurian allegedly ran over three of them, killing one on the spot. Shockingly, the Kalachowkie police were yet to arrest him at the time of going to press, though an FIR had been registered.
Dr Nimish Shah, head of the radiology department, said, "We suddenly heard the puppies squealing. The mother's cries were spine-chilling. Many of us rushed out to see Kurien speeding away. We picked up the injured pups and rushed to Parel animal hospital. Their mother followed us all the way."
At night, five of MGM's residential doctors including Dr Shah, resident medical officer Dr Jitendra Patil and medical superintendent Dr Gajanan Bhagat along with accounts officer Mr Shirdankar and witness Vaijanti Kadam marched to Kalachowki police station. They waited till 3 am, when the punchnama was done.
When Dr Shah confronted Kurien, he saw no signs of remorse. "I confronted him. He said, "Go do whatever you want to do." I heard that he has still not been arrested and is roaming around like a king. He has no fear of the law and there have been various complaints against him before too. How can these people get away with such crimes?" he asked.
The officer investigating the case told dna, "An FIR has been registered under sections 279 (rash driving) and 428 (mischief by killing or maiming animal) of the Indian Penal Code. The accused is yet to be arrested." Asking why it had not yet been done, he said that it was because he was out on another case.
